Ohio Renaissance Festival

In mid-October we took a trip to visit the Ohio Renaissance Festival at Harveysburg.

It is the festival's 10 year and our second year to visit them. What is a renaissance festival? Well, think of a county fair -- Food, rides, games, shows, crafts. Now place it in the 16th century -- people (well all those who run the festival, the craftsmen/women and some of the attendees) are in period costume;

Is a dragon costume really period dress?

Vendors entice you with food, crafts and games. Food includes stew, steak on a stick pretzels, apple dumplings, cookies and the piece d'reistance - smoked turkey legs. Rides are all human powered. Games, well, they aren't our thing, so I can't tell you much, although I did capture a picture of the Vegetable Throw on the vendors page. Entertainers are our favorite part. Shows include jousting, swordsmen, jugglers, gypsy dancers, musicians. Crafts include wooden bowls, swords and daggers, bubble blowers, flowers for m'ladies hair, period clothing, pewter and glass figurines, candles, and even furniture.

There are renaissance festivals all over the U.S. Most are seasonal or even a single weekend. Check out The Directorie of renaissance faires and make plans to attend one yourself.
